Purple Haze Dragon Fruit is a hybrid variety that comes from Selenicereus Guatemalensis and Selenicereus Undatus. The fruit of Purple Haze has a bright purple flesh with a pink exterior and green fins with a refreshing sweet grape type flavor. Fruits are large and can range from 1.0 to 2.0 pounds, but for even more abundant fruit, try bud thinning. This variety typically has three fruiting cycles per the calendar year. Some internet research mentions Purple Haze to be self-pollinating. However, we found this not to be accurate. Instead, our flowers are self-sterile, meaning you will need another pollinator for the fruit to set. In 2015, we recorded a fruit just over 2 pounds that had a brix score of 19. This plant has typical Selenicereus Undatus three-sided growth that is very aggressive and fills in quickly. Additional internet research has stated that 5-S and Purple Haze are the same. The 5-S is seedling created by Paul Thomson and mentioned in his book Pitahaya. 5-S is a cross between Rixford, a purple-fleshed variety, and Niezel, a white-fleshed variety.
