Princess of the Night – Selenicereus Pteranthus.
Princess of the Night is a popular night-blooming cactus from the genus Selenicereus and the species Pteranthus. Its origin is several Caribbean Islands Islands, including Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti, and also in Mexico. Stems are green, and in some cases, they have purple along the edges. Growth is 4 to 6 sided with spines along each side. Segments of growth can reach 10 feet and 2 inches in diameter.
Like many Selenicereus species, this variety is nocturnal blooming with blooms staying open till late morning that is typically fragrant. Flower buds start by looking like miniature pointed cotton balls. Soon after, slender floral tubes having hairs at the base form blooms 8″ wide. The flower is white and yellow with yellow and red back petals when fully opened.
Fruits from the Princess of the Night is unique, weighing about half a pound each. The exterior is pink skin covered with spines that are easily brushed off once the fruit is ripe. The flesh is firm with small crunchy seeds. The first fruit tested in 2019 with a brix rating of 11.5. Fruits have a mild flavor that is quite refreshing when chilled.
