Israel Yellow Dragon Fruit variety comes from the genus Selenicereus and the species Undatus. It was made popular by a University in Israel where Dragon Fruit research has been done since 1984.
The plant growth of Israel Yellow is typical of undatus growth in size, shape, and color. The stems are segmented and three-sided with small thorns. Segments turn a lemon yellow under summer full sun heat. Pruning is necessary as we found that growth segments can get very long.
lower bud to flower open took 20 days. The flowers are at their largest when fully open a few hours after sunset, then close a couple of hours after sunrise. Flowering starts in July and continues through the fall. Israel Yellow flowers resemble flowers of most undatus species, and we are testing for self-fertility.
The fruits of Israel Yellow are oval and weigh about one pound. The flesh color is a semi-transparent white, and the skin is yellow and green fins. From flower to fruit, it took 25 days. The flesh is juicy with a nice firm texture that has an average brix of 15. Fruits can be left on the vine longer for an improved sweetness however the flesh gets less firm over time.
