S. Stenopterus X S. Guatemalensis. Created by Edgar Valdivia a member of the California Rare Fruit Grower organization, this variety is a seedling of one of the early varieties of the Asunta series (A stand for Asunta and X stands for Unknown).
This variety is a fast grower and easy to train up a trellis. Just like the other Asuntas, the flower is Pink and is self-sterile, cross pollination is required and flowers might be needed to be opened manually. The fruit average weight of 1-1.5 Lbs. The exterior is Green with pink undertone and lime green fin with pink tip. The flesh has a magenta color and flavor is sweet melon with no acidity what so ever. Brix reported at 20-21
- Ax’s plant growth is similar to the early Asunta series hybrids in size, shape, color, and thorns. The plant material is three-sided with small spins and green color. The Ax variety is a vigorous grower with the young tender plant material that takes longer to harden and mature. Because of this, it is straightforward to train and trellis.
- The flower bud is also impressive, resembling the Asunta series of hybrids. flower opens at dusk and closes at sunrise. When compared to other Slenecereus varieties, this is earlier. The stigma is very similar to a Connie Mayer stigma in size and shape; however, it’s much further from the anthers. Flowers of Ax are self-sterile, so we used H. undatus pollen to ensure fruit set.
- Fruits weigh in at a pound or just over a pound. The fruit’s mature skin is green, making it difficult to determine when the fruit is ready to harvest. We recommend taking note when the flower opens and harvests the fruit 60 days after blooming. The purple flesh is firm with excellent flavor.
- variety’s aggressive growth, beautiful flowers, and unique yet great-tasting fruit are worth collecting compared to the other Dragon Fruit varieties
